Skin Care: The Golden Rule

Updated: Jun 29, 2020

Skin can be extremely difficult to manage! Some days you might feel like you have finally got things under control, and then the next day you discover a new break out! I have struggled with acne ever since high school, and would dream of day that I would turn 20 and it would all magically disappear, right? Wrong! Adult acne is a thing, and my sister and I continue our search for the perfect cure all. Although we have not achieved perfect skin yet, we have learned a lot of information a long the way. I hope you find this post helpful, and remember that you are not alone.

I am sure we will have many more posts to come, sharing various methods that have helped to transform our skin. This tip is so important because it does not require you to buy any new products! All it takes is a little time, patience, and consistency. The golden rule is to always wash your skin for at least 60 seconds twice a day. This applies to both facial cleansers and exfoliants. I discovered this tip from one of my favorite YouTubers and Licensed Estheticians, Nayamka Roberts-Smith, also known as @LABeautiologist. She has great videos that share the science behind skin care and provide you with many dos and don'ts. Her video is attached below, I hope you enjoy.

Although the 60 Second Rule is extremely simple, that is also the beauty of it. It is such an easy change that anyone can make and the results are visibly noticeable. Since using this method myself, I have seen the overall texture of my face improve leaving me with fewer pesky bumps, gradual fading of acne scars, and super soft skin! It is shocking how using the same product, but in a more efficient way can have such major benefits. This is because you're allowing the products to fully work into the skin and do what they are designed to do! This also ensures that you're removing any dirt and makeup. To motivate myself to continue with my skin care routine I try to make it as mindful as possible! Whenever I start a new journey I add it to the calendar on my phone stating that today is day one of 60 second skin care. I also go ahead and add it to my calendar for 1-3 months in. This way I have something to look forward to and can reflect on any changes I have noticed! And before you know it this positive habit will be formed! Many people like to take pictures as well to keep tract of improvement, this is a great option! I also love to play some of my favorite tunes or a podcast while doing my routine. This makes it very enjoyable and feels less like a chore. Next I turn on my stop watch and massage my face with cleanser for at least one minute. I really feel my skin and give extra love to problem areas, I am sure to massage gently in circular motions with love and care.

I like to work all of my cleansers down my neck and on to my back and chest. This will really help reduce bumps and break outs on the body. Another rule I have on wash day is to always shampoo and condition my hair first, then wash my face and body second. In the past I would allow the conditioner to sit in my hair throughout the duration of my shower while I washed my body and shaved, ultimately rinsing my hair at the very end of my shower. This was probably the worst mistake I've made in regards to my skin because I would get major breakouts on my back. So now I am extremely diligent about cleansing my back and making sure no conditioner remains! I also recommend laying a towel over your shoulders while styling your hair with product, to once again prevent hair product and conditioner from landing on the skin.

Thank you for enjoying our blog, I would love to hear anything you have learned while on your skin journey. Feel free to start an open discussion about acne, so we can learn and achieve our skin care goals together. I am always down to research topics you might be interested in, and help condense the information into an easy to read post!
